LABOUR PARTY’S PETER OBI CLARIFIES RELATIONSHIP WITH PRESIDENT TINUBU, REITERATES COMMITMENT TO GOOD GOVERNANCE
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has stated that he is not at odds with President Bola Tinubu, stressing that his primary focus remains on promoting good governance and tackling pressing social issues in Nigeria.
Speaking at a public engagement upon his return from Rome on Monday, Obi addressed the public’s reaction to a photograph showing him with the president at a recent event. He emphasized that his “fight is against bad governance, against hunger, against poverty, against out-of-school children, against people not having health services,” rather than against any individual.
Obi lamented the country’s low health insurance coverage, noting that it stands at less than 10 percent, and advocated for it to be raised to 100 percent. He also highlighted the importance of education, stating that the responsibility of paying teachers should fall on the government, as stipulated by the Universal Basic Education policy.
The former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his commitment to public welfare, citing his past efforts to prioritize the needs of his constituents. “That’s what I did in Anambra State. I’m in coalition against hunger, in coalition against poverty, in coalition against poor health. What it is for me is not about position. It’s about doing the right thing,” he said.
When asked if his recent interaction with President Tinubu was politically motivated, Obi replied, “Whatever you make of it, I can tell you, I, Peter, have told you where I stand. I just came back this morning. I didn’t go to talk about politics. I’m talking about the education of these children.”
By clarifying his stance and reiterating his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s pressing social issues, Obi has sent a message that his focus remains on promoting good governance, rather than engaging in personal or political conflicts.
